Description
Toprol-XL or Metoprolol is a selective beta receptor blocker used in treatment of several diseases of the cardiovascular system, especially hypertension. It is marketed under the brand name Lopressor by Novartis, and Toprol-XL (in the USA); Seleken or Selokeen (elsewhere); as Minax by Alphapharm (in Australia), as Betaloc by AstraZeneca and as Corvitol by Berlin-Chemie AG.
It should be noted that Lopressor refers to metoprolol tartrate, while Toprol-XL refers to metoprolol succinate, the sustained release formulation.
Metoprolol is prescribed for patients with high blood pressure (hypertension). It is also used to treat chest pain (angina pectoris) related to coronary artery disease. Metoprolol is also useful in slowing and regulating certain types of abnormally rapid heart rates (tachycardias). Other uses for metoprolol include the prevention of migraine headaches and the treatment of certain types of tremors (familial or hereditary essential tremors).
