Description
There is no cure for herpes. Even with treatment, it may be possible to spread herpes.
When daily VALTREX is used to reduce the risk of spreading genital herpes, safer sex practices should be used.
VALTREX is intended for healthy adults. To avoid a potentially serious complication, tell your doctor if your immune system is not normal because of advanced HIV disease, bone marrow or kidney transplant.
Ingredients
VALTREX (valacyclovir hydrochloride) is the hydrochloride salt of L-valyl ester of the
antiviral drug acyclovir (ZOVIRAX® Brand, GlaxoSmithKline).
VALTREX Caplets are for oral administration. Each caplet contains valacyclovir
hydrochloride equivalent to 500 mg or 1 gram valacyclovir and the inactive ingredients carnauba
wax, colloidal silicon dioxide, crospovidone, FD&C Blue No. 2 Lake, hypromellose, magnesium
stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, polysorbate 80, povidone, and titanium
dioxide. The blue, film-coated caplets are printed with edible white ink.
The chemical name of valacyclovir hydrochloride is L-valine, 2-[(2-amino-1,6-dihydro-6-oxo-
9H-purin-9-yl)methoxy]ethyl ester, monohydrochloride.
Valacyclovir hydrochloride is a white to off-white powder with the molecular formula
C13H20N6O4•HCl and a molecular weight of 360.80. The maximum solubility in water at 25°C is
174 mg/mL. The pka’s for valacyclovir hydrochloride are 1.90, 7.47, and 9.43.
Recommendations
VALTREX is indicated for the treatment of herpes zoster (shingles).
VALTREX is indicated for the treatment or suppression of genital herpes in immunocompetent individuals and for the suppression of recurrent genital herpes in HIV-infected individuals.
VALTREX is indicated for the treatment of cold sores (herpes labialis). While taking VALTREX for cold sores, you should not exceed one day of treatment, two doses taken 12 hours apart.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine may be taken on an empty stomach or with food. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light. CONTINUE TO TAKE THIS MEDICINE even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Precautions
IF YOUR SYMPTOMS DO NOT IMPROVE WITHIN A FEW DAYS or if they become worse, check with your doctor.
IF YOU ARE USING THIS MEDICINE FOR GENITAL HERPES, begin using it as soon as you notice symptoms (pain, burning, blisters) of an infection. Use a condom during sexual intercourse.
Using this medicine, alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol, may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. If you are or may be pregnant, check with your doctor for instructions on using this medicine during pregnancy.
Caution is advised when using this medicine in the elderly since they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine.
