Hyzaar Losartan (Hydrochlorthiazide)
Description
Hyzaar (generic name: losartan potassium / hydrochlorothiazide; brand names include: Cosart-H) is a combination of an angiotensin II receptor antagonist (losartan potassium) and a diuretic (hydrochlorothiazide).
Hyzaar is used to:
lower high blood pressure (hypertension);
lower the chance of stroke in patients with high blood pressure and a heart problem called left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH).
The losartan ingredient in Hyzaar helps your blood vessels relax so your blood pressure is lower. The hydrochlorothiazide ingredient in Hyzaar works by making your kidneys pass more water and salt.
Hyzaar is not addictive.
Recommendations
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take Hyzaar exactly as directed.
For most patients, the usual dose is one tablet of Hyzaar 50/12.5 once a day. The dosage depends on your condition and whether you are taking other medicines.
Take your Hyzaar at about the same time each day. Taking your tablet(s) at the same time each day will have the best effect. It will also help you remember when to take the tablets.
Swallow Hyzaar with a glass of water. It does not matter whether you take Hyzaar before or after food.
Continue taking Hyzaar for as long as your doctor prescribes.
If you miss a dose of Hyzaar, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Just take the next dose at your regular time.
Keep Hyzaar at room temperature, away from heat and moisture.
Precautions
Before taking Hyzaar, tell your doctor if:
you are allergic to any medicines;
you have liver or kidney disease, or diabetes;
you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
