Flomax
Description
Flomax (generic name: tamsulosin; brand names include: Veltam / Flomaxtra / Urimax) belongs to a group of medicines called alpha-blockers.
Flomax is used for the treatment of an enlarged prostate - a condition technically known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH.
The walnut-sized prostate gland surrounds the urethra (the duct that drains the bladder). If the gland becomes enlarged, it can squeeze the urethra, interfering with the flow of urine. This can cause difficulty in starting urination, a weak flow of urine, and the need to urinate urgently or more frequently. Flomax doesn't shrink the prostate. Instead, it relaxes the muscle around it, freeing the flow of urine and decreasing urinary symptoms.
For many men, Flomax improves male urinary symptoms due to BPH in as little as one week. And it has been shown to maintain long-term symptom relief.

Recommendations
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take Flomax exactly as directed.
The recommended dose of Flomax is one 0.4 mg capsule, taken once daily, approximately 30 minutes after the same meal each day.
Swallow the capsule whole, preferably with a glass of water. Do not bite or chew the capsule, as this stops it being absorbed at the desired rate.
If you forget to take Flomax, take the missed dose if you remember the same day. Skip the missed dose if you do not remember until the next day. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Store Flomax capsules at room temperature.
Precautions
Before taking Flomax, tell your doctor if:
you are allergic to any medicines;
you have serious liver or kidney function problems;
you are taking other medication which relaxes the smooth muscle.
