Description
Cozaar is used in the treatment of high blood pressure. It is effective when used alone or with other high blood pressure medications, such as diuretics that help the body get rid of water.
Cozaar is also used to slow the progress of kidney disease caused by type 2 diabetes (the type of diabetes that doesn't require insulin shots). It is the first of a new class of blood pressure medications called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. Cozaar works, in part, by preventing the hormone angiotensin II from constricting the blood vessels, which tends to raise blood pressure.
Ingredients
COZAAR* (losartan potassium) is an angiotensin II receptor (type AT1) antagonist. Losartan
potassium, a non-peptide molecule, is chemically described as 2-butyl-4-chloro-1-[p-(o-1H-tetrazol-5-
ylphenyl)benzyl]imidazole-5-methanol monopotassium salt.
Its empirical formula is C22H22ClKN6O.
Losartan potassium is a white to off-white free-flowing crystalline powder with a molecular weight of
461.01. It is freely soluble in water, soluble in alcohols, and slightly soluble in common organic solvents,
such as acetonitrile and methyl ethyl ketone. Oxidation of the 5-hydroxymethyl group on the imidazole ring
results in the active metabolite of losartan.
Recommendations
COZAAR is indicated for the treatment of hypertension. It may be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents, including diuretics.
COZAAR is indicated to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy.
COZAAR is indicated for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy with an elevated serum creatinine and proteinuria (urinary albumin to creatinine ratio 300 mg/g) in patients with type 2 diabetes and a history of hypertension. In this population, COZAAR reduces the rate of progression of nephropathy as measured by the occurrence of doubling of serum creatinine or end stage renal disease (need for dialysis or renal transplantation)
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine may be taken on an empty stomach or with food.
STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light.
IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If you are only taking one dose a day and do not remember your missed dose until the next day, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do NOT take 2 doses at once.
Precautions
Do not take Cozaar when you are pregnant. Avoid it if you have ever had an allergic reaction to it.
Cozaar can cause low blood pressure, especially if you are also taking a diuretic. You may feel light-headed or faint, especially during the first few days of therapy. If these symptoms occur, contact your doctor. Your dosage may need to be adjusted or discontinued. Be sure you know how you react to Cozaar before you drive or operate machinery.
Be sure to tell your doctor about any medical conditions you have, especially liver or kidney disease and congestive heart failure.
Cozaar tends to increase the level of potassium in the blood. Check with your doctor before taking potassium supplements or using a salt substitute.
