Clomid
Description
Clomid is the brand name for a drug called clomiphene citrate, which has been on the market for over 25 years. Initial research indicated that clomiphene seemed to induce menstrual periods in women who were not menstruating or ovulating. Further research and testing showed that clomiphene could help certain nonovulating women fall pregnant by stimulating the ovaries to produce an egg.
Menstruation is a very complex process that is dependent on the action of hormones released by the ovary, the pituitary gland, and the hypothalamus. An imbalance in the levels of these hormones can disturb normal ovulation. This is frequently a cause of female infertility. Clomid may correct the problem by regulating hormonal secretion and by triggering the series of events that results in ovulation.
In various studies involving women with abnormal menstrual cycles, between 50 percent and 94 percent of the women who qualified for clomiphene citrate treatment achieved ovulation.

Your physician will instruct you to take Clomid on either days 3-7 or 5-9 of your cycle, and it is usually based upon the Dr's preference and/or experience. Please follow your physician's directions carefully.
If you experience very bad nausea, vomiting, abdominal bloating, pain or problems with your sight (yellow vision), then you should see stop taking the tablets and see a doctor. These kind of side effects are extremely rare.

Twin pregnancies may occur in as many as 5% of the women who use Clomid. Triplet pregnancies are far more rare. Other reported adverse effects include ovarian enlargement 13.6%,Vasomotor Flushes 10.4%, abdominal or pelvic discomfort, distention or bloating 5.5%, nausea and vomiting 2.2%, breast discomfort 2.1%, visual symptoms (blurred vision, lights, floaters, waves, unspecified visual complaints, photophobia, diplopia, scotoma, etc.) 1.5%, headache 1.3% and abnormal uterine bleeding (intermenstrual spotting, menorrhagia)1.3%. Although there has been much talk about the relationship of clomiphene (and other fertility drugs) to ovarian cancer the vast majority of the evidence now seems to point at infertility itself, rather than the use of fertility drugs as being the primary explanation for the slightly increased incidence of reproductive cancers in the infertility population. Clomid has been used to induce ovulation for more that thirty years. There is not any evidence that it causes an increase in congenital abnormalities or birth defects in children. It is not associated with an increase in premature labor or in other complications of pregnancy.
You may experience some breast tenderness, mild abdominal discomfort or hot flushes. As long as these are not disturbing your daily routine, it is fine to continue taking the tablets.
